DUKE CENTER – Bradford High’s baseball team snapped a three-game
losing streak in a big way Friday afternoon.
Behind 16 hits, the Owls pounded out an 18-1 victory over
Otto-Eldred (1-7) to improve to 2-4 on the season.
Leading Bradford at the plate was Pat Pascarella, who hit a
two-run home run. Teammates Kyle Yurkewicz, Garrett Newhouse, Aaron
Fishkin and Josh Scott each hit doubles for the Owls.
“Our guys were more aggressive at the plate and it paid off,”
Tim Burris, BAHS head coach, said. “Of course, it was great to get
back on the winning track.”
It was nearly a historic day for Newhouse, Bradford’s starting
pitcher, who had a perfect game going into the fifth inning.
With the Owls up 10-0, the Terrors’ Clay Pinner ended any
chances of baseball immortality for Newhouse with a solo home run,
and more importantly, erased a 10-run deficit that would have
forced Otto-Eldred to concede to a game-ending mercy rule.
Still, Newhouse ended the afternoon giving up just two hits and
zero walks with two strikeouts. In a two-inning relief appearance,
Tyler Borowski finished up where Newhouse left off, giving up a
pair of hits while striking out two and walking none.
“They pitched fantastic not walking any hitters the whole
night,” Burris added. “What Garrett did was outstanding, and Tyler
pitched well in relief.”
The game could have ended much earlier for Otto-Eldred.
Fortunately, Lucas Kerr made a leaping grab over the outfield fence
in the first inning to save a grand slam that would have given the
Owls a 7-0 lead — three runs away from the 10-run mercy rule.
On the mound, Noah Colebert, Cody Haulber and Andy James
combined for five strikeouts and six walks in the loss.
Bradford returns to action Wednesday hosting St. Marys.
