DERBY PUZZLE: Who doesn’t love a good puzzle?
We know how popular our crossword puzzle and Cryptoquip are at
The Era because if we ever run the wrong one — God forbid! — we
hear about it long and loud from our readers.
With that in mind, we pass along a special type of puzzle that
should appeal to this special breed of people and also help promote
a good cause.
Our friends at the Bradford Area Public Library are planning the
second annual Derby Gala, a fund-raiser which coincides with the
annual Kentucky Derby. To help build excitement for this event, one
of its supporters has devised a double crostic puzzle with a derby
theme.
Dr. Eric Schonblom has created this special puzzle which you can
pick up at the counter at The Era, 43 Main St. Call and we’ll be
glad to mail you one.
We’re told the puzzle is no more difficult than a crossword
puzzle.
The puzzle clues reveal a quotation related directly to the
Kentucky Derby. There are 26 clues, from A to Z. As the clues are
discovered and placed into the grid, more clues will become quite
apparent and the transfer of information between the grid and the
clues will facilitate the puzzle being completed.
Once the puzzle is complete, by transferring letters to their
appropriate placement, one will uncover the quotation and the name
of the author.
The development of the double crostic puzzle dates back to 1934
when it was first published in the Saturday Review and the design
of the puzzle is credited to Elizabeth Kingsley.
As for the Derby Gala itself, the date is fast approaching. This
year, the Kentucky Derby will be run on Saturday, May 1. (To us,
its always been the perfect sporting event; You need only devote
two minutes of your time, start to finish, rather than the several
hours invested in football or stockcar racing.)
All proceeds to the gala go directly to support the library’s
Endowment Fund which was established in 1984 by the late Virginia
Loveland Miles.
Tickets for the gala itself are available from Graham Florist,
Bradford Club, and the Chamber of Commerce.
