ON ICE: Barney Snyder remembers sled riding in Bradford: “Oh,
boy. Ron Lytel, Bill Hanson and I used to go way up the dirt road
on Birch Street. Ron had an extra long American Flyer or whatever
they were called. Ron was the biggest. On top of him went Bill,
then me. It was kind of like a bobsled run. The steep hill gave us
enough of a start that we made it to a right 90-degree turn onto
Hawthorne Road and all the way down to East Main. Then we would
walk all the way back and do it 3 or 4 times before we had to go in
for dinner.”
“Do you think kids today would think of exercising like
that?
“On one toboggan run down one of those rough dirt roads in the
hills behind Birch street, Bill laughed so hard watching four kids
bounce all over the place that he wet his pants. Those were the
days, and we are all still alive and kickin.’”
A reader also dropped us this e-line: “When I was growing up,
another neighborhood skating pond was the one on Lake Circle Drive
in Kenmar Acres (off Bolivar Drive). The was also the best place in
the summer to catch salamanders. Of course, the pond is now filled
in.”
THE REDMEN: Eilene Flegal Fedorko of Johnsonburg writes about
those Redmen, the subject of a few RTSs:
“I was recently doing a scrapbook of old Johnsonburg pictures
and one was a picture of the Order of the Redman banner from the
Johnsonburg lodge. I remembered a picture of my grandfather, Court
R. Flegal, and his brother-in-law Roy Carson dressed in Indian
costumes. My mother told me long ago that they belonged to a Redman
lodge but didn’t know anything more about it. Well, now I have that
information to put in my scrapbook.”
Glad we could be of help, Eilene.
THAT SONG: We’ve had a couple comments on the song WESB used for
its nightly sign-off — all a slight variation on the same theme.
Mac writes, “I believe the tune for the WESB sign-off was
‘Stardust.’” Rocco Camas says the nightly program, “Dreamdust,”
aired a song called “Dream” every night. We’re awaiting more
feedback on this subject. Readers?
