BOOKMARK: Tune in to National Public Radio today or Sunday to
hear local author Ann McCauley reviewing “Still Alice” by Lisa
Genova. Ann — who most of us know as Cheryl Bazzoui — will do the
review on WPSU’s radio show BookMark at 4:30 p.m. today and 9:30
Sunday. The station is at 90.1 or 100.9.

SWIMMIN’ HOLES: Steve Bell of Eldred writes us, “Your articles
on McKean County swimming holes remind me of a story told over and
over again by my Grandfather, Henry Harris. He grew up in Coryville
and talked about the ‘old swimming hole’ along Potato Creek.”

“When he and his friends were young, they would go down to watch
the older kids swim. Of course, if their mothers knew, they would
be skinned alive because none of them knew how to swim.

“Well, one day, as chance would have it, Henry fell in. All he
could think about was what he heard the old-timers say, ‘If you
went under three times, and came back up, you were going to make
it.’ Needless to say, he came up a third time, and by the end of
that summer, all his friends were swimming.

“Grandpa loved to laugh at his own stories, and this is one in
particular I will never forget.”

TWO THINGS: Don Krebs “of suburban Crosby” weighs in on a couple
recent RTS subjects:

“Greg Dennis mentioned that UFO opened the Ohio Express concert
back in 1969. I work in Bucks county and UFO was at the
Sellersville Theatre there in October 2009. The singer (original),
Phil Mogg mentioned that their first tour in America was 40 years
ago (1969). I wish I would have been able to ask him afterward if
he remembered Bradford, Pa.

“Also, the reader who thought Zippo should have the stock ticker
symbol ZZZ but was surprised that it was Sealy should be informed
that Zippo is not a publicly traded company and therefore it has no
‘ticker symbol.’”

NO QUOTES: We are going through withdrawal for the year 2010. We
used to welcome these odd spots at the end of our column to use a
quote from the Freedom Forum calendar. We know not why — probably
something to do with that nasty subject called money — but our 2010
desk calendar never arrived.
