RTS for Thursday, February 25, 2010

LOOK UP: It was a week ago now that we ran a front-page
photograph of the flag waving in the wind atop a tower at American
Refining Group refinery. If you looking closely at the picture, you
can see a tiny dot which we’re told was actually an owl.

Greg Dennis dropped us an e-line the day the photo appeared: “A
stronger lens would reveal that at the top of the tallest tower
pictured there, to the right of the American flag, there is an owl
on a perch. Is it real or is it fake? Perhaps it is celebrating the
Bradford Owls capture of the District 9 Title last night?  Those
are questions for your readers to sort out!”

No doubt, the timing was perfect for the Owls’ win the previous
night.

But in any case — Go Owls!

SAME SHOT: Our RTS that day drew this comment from Judi
Robinson: “This is not a comment about the best cars for 2009, but
when I opened the Bradford website there was a picture of a tower
for American Refining Group and I am wondering if this was Kendall
Refining or a completely different company.”

Judi, you’ve been gone too long. This used to be Kendall
refinery but the company was purchased by ARG quite a few years
ago. ARG’s main product is Brad Penn lubricating oil. If memory
serves us right, the Kendall brand was purchased by Sunoco and it
is still available locally.

In any case, ARG is alive and doing quite well — for which
Bradford is eternally grateful.

TOMORROW: That reminds us: Our annual Progress edition, an
overview of our industrial and manufacturing community, will be
part of tomorrow’s Era. Be sure to grab a copy of this popular
business review. For you online readers — we’ll be posting this
special edition online in coming weeks.

DYNAMIC DUO: Linda Woodley writes about another concert that
sticks in her mind: “Another fantastic concert was in 1962, the duo
pianists Ferrante and Teicher. They were sponsored by the Bradford
Civic Music Association at the Senior High Auditorium.”

“I still have the autographed program from that night and in my
memory hear the melody of ‘Exodus’ played by this awesome duo.
Interesting that the program includes a salute to a former
Bradfordian —  Marilyn Horne — and lists her accomplishments,”
Linda writes.
