WRONG PLACE: We gave the wrong location for the re-enactment of
a murder trial from the 1930s, an event being sponsored by the
McKean County Historical Society. Correctly, the Feb. 18 event will
be held at the County Courthouse.

DICK MATTISON: Frank Sasso, a Bradford High teacher instrumental
in bringing the Four Seasons to town many years ago, passes along
some information about then- president of Student Council Dick
Mattison. Dick has provided us with lots of information about the
concert.

Frank writes, “Dick Mattison is a prime example of the many
talented, home-grown students who passed through the Bradford
school system over the years. I wonder how many Bradfordians know
that he is one of the leading child psychiatrists in the U.S.
today. His story, among those of many other former students, speaks
well of our schools and our community.”

SWIMMIN’ SITES: Equal time for natural swimming holes along
Potato Creek from Donald J. Comes of Smethport:

“Norwich and Keating Township had many nice natural swimming
areas back in the 1940s-1950s. Starting down in Norwich was a hole
near the Post Office and Store, ‘West Branch’ Betula had two good
ones near the crossroads.

“Coming north was one in Keystone and one in Hamlin — near
Gallup’s Corners and Sackett Hollow.

“At the foot of Red Mill brook behind the Township Shed was a
good deep one on Potato Creek. Next was one on John Peterson’s
Farm.

“Coming more north was one large one behind Anderson’s Store and
Pump Station. Next was on McDade’s farm and Crosby Crossroads to
Robbins Brook.

“Crosby’s largest and deepest one was across from Enos Marsh
Farm ‘Stove House’ where Potato Creek takes a very large bend at
Route 46. North from there was one where Browns lived and foot of
Daly Brook.

“At Burbank Crossroads at Galco Park was another nice one.

“Coming up north from E.D. Comes’ Farm was another hole on
Olsen’s farm, then going north where Marvin Creek meets Potato
Creek near East Smethport Bridge. Continuing north were some
between Smethport and Quaker State Refinery.

“You could always walk the railroad tracks from Betula to East
Smethport and find all the good swimming holes.”
