CORNER STORE: We bring you some poetry from the Feb. 5, 1910,
edition of The Bradford Era. It’s called, “The Corner Grocery
Store”:
“When the wind sweeps down the valley and the frost is in the
air,
And the snow drifts to the winders, flakes a flyin’
everywhere,
That’s the time we like to gather, we old fellers, 10 or
more,
’Round the stove that’s so invitin’ in the corner grocery
store.
We just take a sight of comfort spinnin’ yarns and settin’
‘round,
Talkin’ ‘bout the old inventions and the newest ones that’s
found;
But it does beat all creation why them fellers never see,
When disputin’ on a matter, no one’s ever right but me.
We have settled mighty questions in that corner grocery
store,
Guess the government is a-leanin’ on us fellers more and
more;
‘Spose they get the idears from us through some slick detective
feller,
Who pretends he is a-buyin’ cheese and butter, nice and
yeller.
All the autos go a-scootin’ down the road with all their
might,
Cows a-jumpin’ over fences, hens quit layin’ from the
fright.
Now if Congress don’t soon stop this, they can’t get advice no
more,
Cause we’ll just have secret sessions at the corner grocery
store.
Yes, we settle all these questions, everything that comes our
way.
When we’re through with any subject, there ain’t any more to
say;
If our president gets in trouble with an international fuss,
He ain’t afraid for he’s a-knowin he can always come to us.
So we always like to gather in a friendly sort o’ way,
Sit an talk about the ‘doin’s’ ’till the closing of the day;
And sometimes we keep on chatterin’ ’till the twilight is no
more,
For we take a sight of comfort in the corner grocery store.”
ANOTHER CONCERT: In light of all the coverage we’ve given the
performance of the Four Seasons in Bradford, we must mention
another concert. Stephen Longnecker writes, “Does anybody remember
the Spencer Davis Group playing BAHS after the new auditorium was
finished in 1966 or ’67? Now THAT was REAL talent. I think there
may have been 300 people there, tops.”
