SCOTT BROWN: Judi Fisher-Miller of Plainville, Mass., writes of
her now-famous political neighbor:
“Not often I get to read about one of my neighbors in The
Bradford Era. Scott Brown lives about two miles from me and I had
both of his daughters in the middle school I work in.
“I knew he had a local connection from the PA area when his
daughter was on American Idol – the Era put something in it about
her. Although I do not like all of Brown’s policies, I am proud he
is my neighbor and has made it this far. Who knows, someday I may
say I’ve met the President!”
GOOD IDEA: Marie Shugars drops us an e-line: “I read with
interest the other day about the city fining people who do not keep
a path shoveled on their sidewalks. Try and find a child in some
neighborhoods that will shovel snow. The children are just handed
money from their parents. They don’t know what it is to work.”
“Even some grown men won’t shovel snow for the elderly. Besides,
how can some of the elderly afford to pay to have their walks
shoveled. Isn’t there any Scout groups out there that will help
some of these people? A little bit of money is better than no
money. Let’s help out the elderly and make yourself feel good.”
Marie is right. It’s not easy to find someone willing to do the
shoveling for the disabled or elderly. In Olean, N.Y., we’ve read
where there is a volunteer shoveling program to assist shut-ins
with this city-ordered tasks. It would be nice to see such a
program develop in Bradford.
ICE SKATING: Gary Barr picks up on our inquiry about old-time
ice skating places in Bradford writing, “We used a pond behind the
Alexander’s house toward Glade Mealy’s Exxon station. We used to
bring crude oil and soak cattails and light them for night
skating.”
SWIMMING HOLE: At the other end of the calendar, we hear from
Chauncey Kan of Panama City Beach, Fla.: “Has no one mentioned any
of the reservoirs as a great swimming hole? One of my favorites
was the one at the end of West Corydon. It was trespassing, but
that just made it more exciting.”
