LOOK UP: Jon Hackett of Bradford read about our readers spying a
pair of eagles at Tuna Crossroads and sent along a videotape of an
eagle he had seen on Oct. 17 in Limestone, N.Y. We’d guess it was
one of the same birds. We must admit, though, that our stone-age
computer would not allow us to view the video. Drat.

EGGHOLE: Fred Holly of Cleveland, Ohio, writes, “We have enjoyed
all the columns about swimming in the creek in the old days.”

“I remember swimming in the creek behind Hobson Place field in
the early 1940s. At that time, we called it ‘Egghole.’ I wonder if
any of your readers recall ‘Egghole.”

Fred tells used he used to be one of our newspaper carriers on
the Congress Street route from 1944-1947.

YEARS AGO: We piqued Don Carlson’s memory of growing up in
Pennsylvania with a comment about making maple syrup.

“Wow, as a kid I made maple sugar. In Florida, they don’t have
maple syrup. And miss those days,” he writes us from Punta
Gorda.

REDMEN’S CLUB: When a reader mentioned Kan’s bar on West
Washington Street, it jogged the memory of Hal Harmon of Bradford —
not about the bar but the place next door called The Redmen’s
Club.

This would have been in the early 1950s, way, way before urban
renewal hit this entire neighborhood in a big way. It would have
been way, way before it was politically incorrect to refer to
anyone as a “redman”!

GAME NEWS: Our item yesterday about getting some wildlife
related gifts from the Pennsylvania Game Commission neglected to
mention that they are available online at the commission’
website.

We also wanted to mention, but ran out of space, that the
website is also offering a book to assist first-time birders as
well as seasoned bird watchers.

“The Birds of Pennsylvania,” written by Franklin Haas and Roger
Burrows, is a complete guide to identifying Pennsylvania wild
birds, and features 295 of the bird species most likely to be found
in the Commonwealth.

A good gift for a birder on your list!
