SWINE STORY: When we left you yesterday, Bob Slike had just
recovered his wimpering beagle which had just met up with a wild
pig in the 1970s.
“I picked up my dog and gun and headed for a pile of casing and
got on top of it hoping they would go the other way. They did, but
I had my double 16 gauge off safe for whatever good it would do, if
any, on a hog.
“When I first saw them and realized they were not deer but hogs,
I thought that they belonged to someone in the area and had escaped
their pen. When on top of the casing pile, a better look at them
convinced me they were wild hogs. We saw feral hogs in North
Carolina while hunting quail, so I knew what they looked like.
These sure resembled those southern wild hogs. We were told, if we
encountered them, to leave them alone as they could be trouble, and
they can take a lot of lead!
“The only conclusion I could arrive at was that the rabbit had
run through the area where these three hogs were feeding on fallen
apples, and when the hounds came by, hot on the rabbit’s trail, one
of the hogs attacked Sherry.
“Ed was farther up on the hill, and the hogs ran behind him out
of his sight. I told Ed what I had seen. I don’t think he really
took me too serious, but he did see that my dog was cowering and
not wanting to leave my feet. We picked up his hound and went to
another area. However, Sherry did not run her best the rest of the
day.
“I questioned several residents of the South Kendall Road area
about wild hogs only to be told, ‘No, they knew of no wild hogs or
had ever heard of any being in the area.’
“When I read RTS recently and saw the coverage on the Buffalo TV
news channels about the hogs being sighted, I just had to tell my
story! I never told too many of this encounter as I was afraid they
would think my imagination was working overtime; if Sherry was
still alive and could talk, I am sure she would back me up. Trust
me, this is the gospel truth!”
