LOOK UP: Dominick and Bill phoned last week to report seeing two
bald eagles at the Tuna Cross Road Bridge. They tried to snap a
photo but, alas, the birds took wing.
DYNAMIC DUO: Joe Bennett of West Lafayette, Ind., writes: “The
Wall Street Journal article about Albert Montecalvo and Frank
Langianese went very quickly around the world to former residents
of Lewis Run and to members of my family who still remember fondly
long-ago visits to the little town.”
“I could see both the Montecalvo and Langianese homes from my
back porch as a boy. These fine men are about 20 years older than
me, and I hope they are enjoying the well-deserved attention the
article is bringing to them.
“Albert (usually called Abby) had three sisters who were
lifelong friends to my mother. Josephine was a nurse and a U. S.
Army veteran. In a town that had no physician, she was a one-woman
emergency room, treating injuries and making late-night visits to
the sick.
“Mary lost her sight as a young woman but never lost her
cheerful nature or her love of working in the garden. Nettie took
care of the Montecalvo household. Abby had two lovely daughters,
Christie and Natalie; Natalie worked for The Bradford Era at one
time.
“Frank Langianese (nicknamed Lefty) was heavily involved in
sports. He played for and managed the Lewis Run team in the
McKean-Elk baseball league and officiated high school football
games.
“Both Frank and Abby were generous and considerate to the
raggedy kids like me who liked to hang around the older fellows.
That these two men are still contributing to their home town after
all these years is quite remarkable, but it is not at all
surprising.”
HOTS NEWS: Craig Steinkamp writes: “Cathy and I very seldom come
to Bradford without stopping at the Texas Hots near the Wal-Mart
location. We do a lot of traveling, and both agree they are the
best we have found. The Keystone must have been before my time but
I am sure they were great, too. The man was correct by saying they
made a great breakfast. I have gotten them to go and, too, have
enjoyed ‘the breakfast of champions.’ Keep them coming, they’re a
legend in their own time.”
