WHERE’S PRIDE?: Darlene (Zickefoose) Dorward wrote us earlier
this week: “Tonight at the McKean County Fair, as I watched the
parade from the grandstand, I felt sad inside as the local high
school bands marched by. Only one band wore their school colors in
full uniform. (You know who you are, be proud!) The other schools
wore shorts and T-shirts, and not even in their school colors. But
then some schools didn’t even bother to show up! (You know who you
are, too!) What a shame!”

“If the local schools can send a queen representative to the
County Fair, they could at least stand behind her and show some
support! I’m sure the schools can do better next year, I’ll be
watching!”

Darlene signed it, “From a former BHS cheerleader who was/is
proud to wear her school colors.”

IN THE NEWS: The Wall Street Journal, at least in its online
edition, carried a story on the health care debate and with it was
a photograph of former Bradford resident John Geary.

We received a note along with a link to the picture (which
wouldn’t be kosher for us, another newspaper, to “lift”) which told
us that Mr. Geary lived in Bradford for over 30 years. He worked at
Corning and Bradford Electronics and was active in the Hanley Park
Horseshoe league.

“I think the photo shows the frustration of America in
understanding these health care issues,” our writer continued. Mr.
Geary was shown with head bowed, apparently at one of the many town
hall meetings held around the country.

ONE MORE: Our coverage of the flood of 1999 brought this note
from Ferris Thompson, South Miami, Fla.: “How about the flood of
all floods in about 1950? Our feed mill, the Bradford Milling Co.,
had three feet of water inside and the floor was two feet above
street level, located where Tops is now.”

BEAR UPDATE: Judi Miller of Plainville, Mass., writes: “While
visiting my mother Marge Fisher last week we took a ride to State
Park. We came along a mother bear, who looked to be injured,
crossing the road followed by two small cubs.”

It’s nice to know a few bears are still calling Allegany State
Park home. Note, though, that the mother bear apparently wasn’t
walking too good. If she were, she’d probably have made it “over
the hill” to Bradford.
