OLD STAR: Tom Yohe must have been doing some work around the
house and unearthed an old newspaper. What we found interesting was
that it was not an Era but, rather, the Bradford Evening Star from
May 2, 1935.
It’s in pretty rough shape but we found an interesting article
on the front page, datelined Punxsutawney, under the headline,
“Bandits Rupture Man”:
“An 83-year-old Brockway man, brutally ruptured by one of two
bandits who tortured him into giving up $56 he had saved for taxes,
lay critically injured at the home of a son-in-law in Hazen
today.”
“The victim John Penfield was found in his home Tuesday night by
his son-in-law, Richard Wilson. The robbery and injury which
occurred Sunday night was reported to county authorities and state
police today.”
Another story could have been written today. Headlined,
“Unraveling of Tax Crisis due Monday night,” the story reads,
“Pennsylvania’s critical tax deadlock was split wide open today
with solution apparently in the offing for next week through a
compromise between ‘old guard’ Republicans and the administration
or a new Senate coalition.”
What’s old is new, at least in Harrisburg.
COLD NEWS: Era sports editor Joe Vinelli, seeing our item
Saturday about Crosby hitting the 34-degree mark during our recent
“dog days,” reminds us of a report we carried a year or so ago
about July 1977. Joe tells us he was attending Jim Satalin’s
basketball camp at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y.,
and it snowed!
MEA CULPA: We need to set the record straight: In a column about
the defoliated hills in Potter County, we erroneously referred to
Stan Hess as district forester. In fact, he is the county service
forester.
GAS PAINS: More sympathy coming Bradford’s way for our gas
prices.
Gary Daugherty of Port Allegany phoned last week to tell us
prices there were $2.45 a gallon. “I was in Bradford the other day
and couldn’t believe the prices,” he told us.
Bob South of Bradford tells us, “I was going through Penfield
Thursday and the Country Fair was selling gas at 2.35 per gallon. I
really think ours gas should be a little closer to that price here
in Bradford. Let’s not forget the old saying, ‘Buy in Bradford.’
How about a little help from our gas suppliers!”
