BOOK SALE: Do you like to read? Be sure to stop at the
Newspapers In Education book sale on Friday or Saturday and stock
up while enjoying Summer Daze activities downtown. Our NIE
coordinator Jane Larson said she has hundreds of reasonably priced
books. The sale is being held at 93 Main Street (former location of
the United Way office). Hours are noon to 8 p.m. on Friday and 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Proceeds benefit the NIE program here
at The Era.
BEAR SOLUTION?: We appreciate people who think outside the box.
And so, today, we present a suggestion from Jody Jaros of Port
Allegany to our never-ended problem with bears traipsing around our
neighborhoods.
She writes, “I have been reading, with much interest, your
recent articles about marauding bears in your area and I have a
suggestion for the Game Commission to remedy the situation. Of
course, I KNOW that they will totally disagree and say it won’t
work, but here goes …”
“Different organizations around here have feeding stations for
turkey and deer so why not do the same thing for bears?
“In an area where there seems to be the most bear activity,
place feeding troughs of some kind and fill with fruits and
vegetables and things that bears like to eat, easily obtainable
from your local grocery stores as they dispose of all kinds of
foods after a certain date.
“Place these feeding stations far back in the woods surrounding
known active spots that these bears are frequenting.
“They will eat their fill, grow nice and fat and lazy and have
no need to come in close to humans to find food.
“After all, humans are slowly encroaching into the wildlife
habitat here in our wonderful woodlands of Pennsylvania, with all
of the new country homes and developments that are being built. It
was their (the bears) ‘living quarters’ in the first place, so how
are they to know to stay out?
“This would sure beat the expense of the manpower hours, traps,
mileage, fuel, etc. spent capturing and releasing these wonderful
creatures back into a safer area.
“Seems like a plan to me. Or is it just TOO easy? Build a bear
feeder, they will come!”
We like the idea but agree that the Game Commission might have
other thoughts on Jody’s suggestion!
