BYE, BEARS: Gerry Ford has a couple good ideas when it comes to
our roving bear problem. He writes, “I live in Irish Hollow, bear
country. I have no problems with bear because I don’t have any food
available to them. Cheryl leaves for work early in the morning and
always makes a little extra noise so if a bear is around it knows
she is coming. No food and a little noise equal no problem.”

We’ve seen those nature programs on keeping even grizzlies are
at distance and, in them, people will holler out, “Hey, bear,” to
get these creatures’ attention. On the other hand, we can’t help
but think one of those annoying air horns would do the trick,
too.

A BEAUTY: A photograph in the current edition of Pennsylvania
magazine took us right back to winter.

Douglas Kunicki of Kane took home honorably mention in its, “At
Dusk or Dawn,” photo contest for a shot taken at sunset at Sugar
Bay on the Allegheny Reservoir. Honestly, it looks like it could
have been taken in Alaska. Gives us goosebumps even in July. It’s a
beautiful shot of the stream entering the reservoir, snow on both
banks, hills in the distance, and the red sky streaking through
black clouds.

STILL TIME: Have you ever looked at the newspaper – The Era or
any other paper – and wondered why some good story you heard was
never printed? Have you ever wondered why there’s no “good news” in
the paper (even though we would beg to differ)?

Well, this is your chance to be heard.

The Era is gathering information, photos and text for a special
project called, “Community Tales & Treasures.”

It’s for our Bradford residents, of course, but we’re interested
in information from the entire region including all of McKean
County, Potter, Cameron and Elk counties in Pennsylvania and
Cattaraugus County, N.Y.

If you’ve seen our stories and advertisements about this project
and been thinking about submitting a “tale” or “treasure” consider
this your little nudge. Our deadline is this Friday.

Submissions can be mailed to us at 43 Main St. We have a special
address for e-mail articles, “eraspecialsections@gmail.com”. If
you’d rather we do the writing, that’s fine, too. Call our
advertising department and they’ll put you in touch with a writer
specially assigned to this project.
