B-R-RADFORD: Anybody looking at a weather map is familiar with
our location in a “dip” into the center of Pennsylvania, a spot
that always shows our temperature to be a bit cooler than the
surrounding regions.
That became evident, once again, this past weekend when a frost
(or two, depending on your location) reminded us that it is not
safe to plant flowers or vegetables until June 10.
A few warm days or weekends in May have always lured us into
“early” planting only to scurry outside with newspapers or rags to
cover up our precious petunias or tomatoes. We, too, are seduced by
these early bouts of summer-like weather especially since many
years, no frost comes after mid-May.
We are told now that planting should wait until after the first
full moon in June. We cannot vouch for that but will note that June
7 is the date in question this month.
Meanwhile, it’s 1:17 p.m. on Monday and our heater is still on
in our little niche.
Thus, for today, word to wise: Just because the calendar says
June doesn’t mean it’s summer yet.
BEAR REPORT: Stephen Thompson of 543 South Ave. phone Monday
morning to report seeing a 250-pound black bear rumbling through
his neighbor’s yard.
THAT CORNER: Joyce Brown of Southgate Road tells us her parents
had a restaurant, the Log Cabin, next to Ruth Brothers in the early
1950s.
Hers is one of a few comments we’ve had about businesses at or
near the Bolivar Drive intersection with East Main Street.
Joyce said the Log Cabin, which operated in the early 1950s, was
owned by Harry and Ada Bennett.
GAS PAIN: We’re going through a period, once again, when gas
prices are changing so rapidly that the reports we get are outdated
practically by the time we get them in print. Nonetheless, we try.
A caller on Friday said gas prices in Kane were at ,2.27. Prices on
Monday in Bradford has passed the ,2.50 mark.
‘DUH’ MOMENT: A caller had a trivia question: What was the name
of that restaurant on Dorothy Lane between West Washington and
Corydon Streets that closed about 15 years ago? We figured our
readers would know … when the proverbial light bulb came on and the
name, “Roman Villa,” popped into our mind. Of course!
