WILD TIME: This past weekend was obviously a great time for
viewing wildlife – of all types.

Skip Riekofsky of Kushequa dropped us an e-line Monday: “I saw a
familiar form in the sky Saturday afternoon and after retrieving my
binoculars I confirmed that it was indeed an osprey, first one that
I’ve seen in this valley.”

“I’ve seen eagles before but never an osprey.

“On a couple other notes, the hummers are sure hungry this year.
I recently filled my feeder(s) for the second time which is
somewhat unusual for mine, anyways at this time of year. Saturday
and Sunday nights I watched lightning bugs, not many mind you, but
they we’re undeniably fireflies.

“Speaking of insects, I’ve been noticing a few honeybees, not as
many as other years but still refreshing to see.”

Back in Bradford, we have a couple reports of black bears
roaming around. A Dennis Lane family reports such an unwanted
weekend guest on Saturday. The bear was loping through the
neighborhood when it paused to climb a tree part way before
climbing back down and running across West Washington Street into
the hills.

We also heard there is a family of five foxes – mom, pop and
three babies – living in a shed on Lang Maid.

We got some photos, too, from April and Vicki Soriano of Anthony
Lane of a young bear they spotted out their kitchen window Sunday
morning. This bear, too, has been making the rounds of their
neighborhood for the past few weeks.

As for the photos – they don’t always reproduce well on
newsprint but we’ll work them over and try to get a useable
image.

HOT DOGS: On another subject, a former East Bradford resident
provides details of businesses located near the corner of East Main
and Bolivar Drive. A Tastee Freeze we had mentioned was located
where E-Z TV now sits, she says. It was later the Puppy Palace and
sold all manner of hot dogs. Speaking of hot dogs, she tells us
there once was a portable hot dog stand at the current location of
Northwest Savings Bank.

Where the Crosby gas station now sits, she added, there was
LaValle’s gas station. The owners lived in a white house at that
location and had gas pumps outside. Much of that entire area was
residential at the time.
