TREE TIME: We have a “clip and save” that the timber companies
might want to keep in case any environmentalists walk by.
It’s from our friends at the Bureau of Forestry, Elk State
Forest, and is titled, “Have You Had a Tree Today?” It’s pretty
cleverly done, we must admit.
“Have you used a product made from a tree today? You probably
have and just didn’t realize it. Don’t feel bad because there are
many that I didn’t know about either. There are more than 2,500
products that come from trees and that’s not including lumber,
paper or toothpicks.”
“A tree is a real chemical storage factory with many hidden
secrets. Here is a partial list of the products that depend on the
chemistry of a tree. From the bark we get mulch, chemicals, resins,
waxes, vitamins, plywood adhesives, plastic fillers, lacquers and
oil spill control agents.
“Wood flour and resins are used in dinnerware, electrical
receptacles, toys, cooking utensil handles, telephone housing,
camera cases, and appliance housings.
“Other chemical based celluloses are used in tool handles,
photographic films, sausage casings, football helmets, yarns in
clothing, drapes and rugs, solid rocket fuels and explosives.
Torula Yeast comes from the papermaking process and is used in
baby, cattle, fish, chicken, and pet foods for its meat-like
flavor.
“Turpentine and tall oils are claimed from papermaking are
important ingredients in paint, varnish, adhesives, asphalt,
printing inks, rubber products, soaps, and polishes.
“Synthesized essential oils are used in chewing gum, toothpaste
menthol products, detergents, and shampoo.
“From spent pulping liquor we get products used in cleaning
compounds, insecticides, cement, ceramics, fertilizers, and some
pharmaceuticals. And finally, don’t forget the more common products
like maple syrup, fruits, nuts, and even Band-Aid adhesives.
“So the next time you brush your teeth and take your vitamins
after those pancakes with maple syrup think how a tree started your
day off right.”
