RTS for Saturday, March 7, 2009

COVER GIRL: A beautiful picture of an elk – you can practically
pet her – adorns the cover of the March/April edition of
Pennsylvania magazine. Williard Hill of Needmore had taken the
photo along the roadside near Dent’s Run elk viewing area,
Benezette. It’s part of the magazine’s wildlife series, “Back at
You,” about wildlife seeing us before we can see them – let alone
photograph them. The series had some nice photos but the elk was
the only local shot we saw.

LINCOLN LIFE: Suzie Hartman Miller of St. Petersburg, Fla.,
takes up the challenge from Cary Kaber about the old Lincoln
School.

She writes, “As a longtime resident of Bradford, I had wonderful
memories of attending Lincoln, Fretz and BAHS. The recent article
Cary Kaber wrote in RTS has motivated me to a mission of trying to
make contact with Lincoln School attendees – from any year!”

“I would like to work with Cary in compiling memorabilia, photos
and stories of ‘Life at Lincoln.’ If I can get enough responses,
I’d love to put together a little booklet to have on hand at
Lincoln when people are there on business. If anyone remembers the
whereabouts of anything ‘Lincoln,’ please contact me at smiller112251@yahoo.com. Happy
hunting!”

THOSE SLEDS: Alvan H. Johnson writes to us from Jamestown, N.Y.,
concerning our recent column on the Safety Sled Co. He writes,
“C.J. Johnson was my great-grandfather and he, too, was a great fan
of the safety sleds that his factory made. My dad, Harold A.
Johnson, formerly of Johnsonburg, Pa., used to go to the factory
when he was a small boy from time to time. Thanks again!”

MORE ZIPPO: Lois Lundeen of Kane writes, “Reading a book from
Friends Library here in Kane – a new one by Janet Evanovich, page
281 mentions Zippo lighters two times. The book is very “light” and
humorous by the way. ‘Plum Spooky’ is the name. Interesting!”

GAS PAIN: A reader tells us gas prices in Virginia Beach, Va.,
were at ,1.61 this week. Mike Williams of Limestone, N.Y., phoned
us a couple weeks ago to report gas at ,1.73 a gallon in Millsboro,
Del.

We must admit that gas prices between Bradford and Erie are
holding steady at our mark of about ,1.99.
