TODAY’S QUOTE: “Over the bleached bones and jumbled residue of
numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: ‘Too late.'”
So said Martin Luther King.
BHS ATHLETES: “Over the years there have been great athletes
come out of the area. In my day, Don Frampton was one great all
round athlete. Played QB, Guard on the basketball team and ran
track and got a full ride to KY to play football. Pretty
impressive.”
Barney Snyder of Tucson, Ariz., goes on:
“Then Tom Keane, in my opinion, was the best all-round jock. He
started in all of the sports and was TOPS at them all. He was
competing again Milt Plum at PA State and if he had had more
interest in academics, he could have been their starting QB. Plum
went on to the NFL.Tom was ‘the natural.’ I believe he played some
pro ball as well.
“Many friends tell me stories about the congeniality of Jim
Owens. He would see people from Bradford in the stands in
Pittsburgh for example and if there was time prior to beginning the
game, stand at the corner of the dug out and chat with them just
like old times. That is what happens with people who grew up in
Bradford and other small towns. They are grounded and stay that
way.
“Jim is just a great guy and I’d be surprised if there is anyone
in my day who knew him would have anything bad to say about him. He
was a pretty fair basketball player as well. What I like most about
him was his attitude. He was real calm and unflappable and just
seemed to be able to get the job done.
“Tom Keane was that way, too.
“Linebackers? Dibby Milliron would be a hard one to beat.
Running backs? How about Max Schlopy another Gifford product. In
the intervening years, I am certain that there have been a lot of
great athletes to ocme out of the county and I salute them as well.
Some of your columns really get the juices running as you can see.
“Perhaps 50 years from now, Bradfordians will be writing to
Round the Square about the good old days in 2008.”
