TODAY’S POEM: Blaise V. Dornisch of Johnsonburg sums up the
state of the country:

“‘T’was the week after Christmas, and all through the land.

Our nation was stumbling, as if built upon sand.

Our borders still open, economy in the tank,

National debt sky rocketing, our children say ‘Thanks.’

Social security is broke, as are a few states,

And how do we pay? They’ll raise the tax rates.

The small guy is hurting and who gets the ‘bailout,’

Inefficient carmakers, with Big Labor clout.

Our education system is failing, we are falling behind.

Let’s hope for the best, and the Chinese are kind.

We have the resources, that could power our need,

To get us away, from Middle East greed.

Yet nothing gets done, our leaders divided,

Too pig headed to work on a nation united.

They’ve abandoned their values, tradition, and faith,

And all of the things, that once made us great.

Corruption and greed, now rules the day,

And Congress obliges, by raising their pay.

Our leaders have failed us, they don’t feel the pain,

And mostly are working on personal gain.

They squabble, they bicker, they stomp, and they strut,

Yet nothing gets done, they are stuck in a rut.

We do need big ‘Changes,’ let’s hope for the best,

Cause the next generation, is being handed a mess.

So as we go forward, hoping, for a bright day,

Make your voice heard, but mostly just ‘Pray!'”

NEW YEAR: With today’s “unofficial” start of 2009, we must admit
to a serious backlog of Round the Square material from the holidays
– everything from gas prices and even investigations of same,
material on professional baseball pitcher Jim Owens and other local
athletes, and even a couple Zippo sightings. Bear with us as we
catch up with our contributors.

TODAY’S QUOTE: “We believe that the more transparency there is
in the system, the better the system functions on behalf of the
American people.” Would you believe today’s quote was spoken by
President George W. Bush in 2006? It was.

One thing which pleases us immensely each new year is our annual
Freedom Forum calendar. What great quotes will it contain in 2009?
Our life’s ambition is to say something profound enough to make the
calendar.
