SPORTS TALK: Larry Vecellio of Gainesville, Ga., has a follow-up
on our recent column about local sports.

He writes, “I can recall playing in the McKean Elk League. In
the beginning, Lewis Run was sponsored by the Italian Mutual Aid
Society and were call the Indies. Frank Langianese was our manager
and we would go to East Smethport and always had a verbal argument
with Ma Cooper.”

“I can remember a pitcher from there by the name of DeChano who,
along with my brother Ron, went to Hattiesburg, Miss., and played
for the Yankees farm team. The two combined for a no-hitter in a
game there and then we all sort of moved onto the Tap and Tavern
League.

“There are plenty of memories there with Lewis Run’s Ross’ Inn
being one of the best. As far as I can recall, George Songer of
Lewis Run was the only player to have an unassisted triple play in
the history of that league. A lot of good memories for a lot of
good people.”

GAS PAIN: Gas prices are bobbing around all over the place.

Barb Smith, just returning from a trip to Aiken, S.C., tells us
she saw prices there drop drastically from ,3.19 to ,2.89, ,2.87
and ,2.67 in several weeks’ time.

Don Emberg writes on Monday: “I was in Harrisburg this past week
and purchased gas when I left at ,2.18 per gallon. Same station
lowered their prices three times when I was down there.”

As we were writing this, we received an e-mail from Judy Keenan
of Elkton, Md., where gas prices were at ,2.15. “Makes one wonder
why the drastic difference elsewhere,” she writes.

STARS, MOON: Ellen Tingley of Tampa, Fla., writes: “Speaking of
the star and moon with stairs, I have one in my living room that my
dad Gene Songer made for me years ago. He and Mom had one in their
home and after mentioning to my dad that I would like a set of
them, he made one for me. He was very handy when it came to making
things out of wood.”

TODAY’S QUOTE: “The First Amendment doesn’t exist so we can
freely raise our public officials. It exists so we can freely
criticize our public officials,” said Chris Lamb, educator, College
of Charleston, S.C., 1998.
