BRADFORD FAN: Who was that man at EPCOT at Disney World in
Florida that sang high praises of Bradford?
Chuck Mortimer, who had lived on Bolivar Drive, has been at the
Disney complex for quite a few years. “They just love him down
there,” says Ellie Thumpston who was one of the people who phoned
us Monday to identify a man we had told readers about in a column
that day.
Era reporter Marcie Schellhammer and her family were having a
meal at EPCOT when they learned of a former Bradford resident
lauding his old hometown. Marcie had failed to get his name but now
we know.
REAL PAIN: Just when we’re in a state of euphoria as gas prices
in Bradford fall below the ,3 mark, we discover we’re still lagging
way behind the rest of Pennsylvania.
Former Era managing editor Paul Reichart wrote us late last
week: “I know RTS often muses about gas prices in Bradford, so
here’s some data to cause even more pain: This morning’s
Patriot-News listed two stations on the Harrisburg Pike, which
connects the capital city with Carlisle, at ,2.59 for regular
unleaded.”
“Down here in Dillsburg, on the road to Gettysburg, it has
dropped to ,2.75, although there are some listing in the ,2.60s
just up Route 15 a few miles along the West Shore. Why is it
cheaper here? Competition, of course.
“Take solace, though, that housing prices are much more
affordable in Bradford than they are down here. … But on the other
hand, our winters are milder …”
From another part of the world, Barney Snyder of Tucson writes:
“Wow! I figured when the price of gasoline hit ,4, we would be
rolling over like dogs having their bellies scratched when the
price got to ,2.50. Just what the oil companies figured. In Tucson,
it is just breaking ,3 now.”
“What riles me is the price of diesel. It used to be cheaper
than regular. No matter what, they have us right where they want
us. I recall thinking 52 cents a gallon in 1975 was getting high.
In 1992 we could buy it for about 90 cents.
“It had come off of a higher price so guess I was pleased. I
guess if it ever gets to less than ,2, I’ll feel like I died and
went to heaven.”
