GAS PAIN: We’ve been pleased to see the price of a gallon of
gasoline dropping but, as always, disappointed to learn that
Bradford’s prices remain substantially more than other places.

Chris Carlson of Clermont writes Tuesday, “My wife and I went to
Dayton, Ohio, to visit our son who is stationed at Wright-Patterson
Air Force Base last weekend and to our amazement at one of the
local gas stations the price per gallon was ,2.599. Before heading
home, guess what? We filled up the car. I do see the prices going
down around here. Just wonder if we will ever see gas at
,2.599.”

We also had a note from Ernie Hand in Smethport who just
traveled to Pittsburgh and back. Prices he saw along the way: Erie,
,3.19; Pittsburgh, ,3.15; Oil City and Youngstown, ,2.99.
“Beautiful weekend for driving,” he adds.

Sue Hanson of Mentor, Ohio, dropped us this e-line: “Born in
Bradford in 1932. Left Bradford over 50 years ago but still call it
home. Hate to tell you that gasoline here in Mentor, Ohio, was seen
for ,3.09 a gallon. Maybe it means that it will soon be that in
Bradford. After all it was oil that put Bradford on the map.”

WOOLLY WORM: Eight-year-old Hunter Graham visited The Era this
week, bringing with him a woolly bear caterpillar which predicts a
pretty nice winter. The caterpillar, which Hunter found while
biking near his home in Colonial Heights, had about a quarter inch
of black fur at the front of his body and the rest was brown. By
the way, Hunter did have this winter prognosticator in a plastic
container. He was very much chagrined that our photographer was on
an assignment out of the office and so not available to snap a
picture.

LOOK DOWN?: We recently reported on a balloon launched in
Smethport that was found in the Syracuse, N.Y., area, pointing out
that it was the first such report we had had in quite a long time.
Carol Jarrett phoned Tuesday to report she had seen one about a
month ago while she was mowing her grass. With it was a note from a
church in Uniontown, Ohio. Carol tells us she wrote to the church
to let them know how far the balloon had traveled.
