CENTURY AGO: Our “Years Ago” feature on the editorial page
brings us a lot of feedback, particularly the items from 100 years
ago in Bradford. They provide a unique look into the really old
days and are written in a style that seems humorous to us “modern”
journalists.

The one Monday about a “chestnut vendor” making the rounds
struck a chord with Shirley Black of Bradford: “In this article it
stated that ‘the chestnut vendor is back on the scene … ‘ “That
chestnut vendor was my great grandfather, Dominic DeLorenzo.”

“Great-grandfather’s two grandsons would load the charcoal
burner and grandfather’s harp onto an old wagon and wheel it down
Barbour Street to the corner of Main and Chestnut Streets where
grandfather set up his chestnut stand. He was an accomplished
musician and music teacher and played the harp while he sold hot
chestnuts.”

ON PATROL: We have one more old school patrol photograph to tell
you about, this time from Elk County.

Bob Peterson of Kane dropped by with a large picture taken on
his patrol trip to Washington, D.C., on May 9-11, 1952. The trip
was sponsored by the Elk Cameron Motor Club, St. Marys. Nobody is
identified in the group of about 100 boys and what appears to be
chaperones but Bob recognized his Wilcox gym teacher Jim Kane.

COMING SOON: Sondra Fuller passes along a little item about the
upcoming banquet of the Bradford Area High School Alumni
Association, a group formed to promote and maintain a spirit of
alumni unity through communications and reunions of social
fellowship. Its aim is not to compete but to try to complement the
efforts of the individual classes.

The third alumni banquet will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. Oct. 4
at the Pennhills Club. Reservations may be made with Robert “Bob”
Graham, 315 Seaward Ave.

The alumni association was formed in August 2003 and has held
two banquets, the first on Oct. 16, 2004, and the second Oct. 7,
2006. The yearly dues are ,5.

The association has awarded scholarships to high school
graduates in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Norma Crooks, membership chairman, reported that there are 312
paid members, representing the years 1927-1994. The class of 1950
has the most, then the class of 1957, followed by the class of
1945, and the class of 1946.
