KERSEY – This year’s Elk Expo was one of the most successful in
terms of weather cooperating and the variety of seminars
offered.
A fly fishing seminar with George Daniel, head coach for the
United States Youth Fly Fishing Team, was added this year and
proved very popular.
Meanwhile, a total of 45 lucky hunters had their name called
during the highly anticipated annual elk license drawing. All told,
17 of the licenses will be designated for antlered elk and 28 for
antlerless elk.
“It’s (Expo) doing really well,” Carla Wehler of the PA Great
Outdoors Bureau said. “I think this is our first ever nice weekend
for the Elk Expo. We had had a nice, steady crowd all weekend.”
Wehler said the addition of the fishing seminar helped Expo
organizers to help branch out.
“We usually focus on hunting-related things, so we are excited
to have him here this year,” Wehler said.
Organizers said the elk tours again proved very popular. Every
year, the tours have been able to see elk. Having them a little
later in the day allows it to be cool enough for them (elk) to be
out browsing.
Meanwhile, Nashville recording artist Jerry Schickling and his
band “North Country” kept the crowd going with his songs
“Politically Incorrect Redneck,” “It All Comes Back To Me” and many
more.
Also, turkey callers were given many tips and hints from Dick
Anderson, a Quaker Boy pro staffer.
Anderson encouraged everyone to get their young boys interested
in the sport of turkey hunting before they get interested in girls.
He had a variety of calls that will allow anyone to be successful
in their hunt, including a new line of water-proof box calls.
Freddie McKnight of Working Man Outdoors also gave seminars on
taking better outdoor photographs as well as using a trail cam.
Plans are already under way to make next year’s event even
better.
