We always like to check out the facial expressions of puzzled
new reporters when they get their first call about geese heading
north, a report on spring peepers, or an odd item about legendary
aviator Harri Emery, recipe for Texas Hot sauce, or any of the
other disparate reports that make this column on a daily basis.
FOUR DIGITS: Judith dePonceau of Dover-Foxcroft picks up our
recent conversation about four-digit telephone numbers in
Bradford.
“Are any of these the numbers on the list? They are from June
1941 telephone directory. Four digit numbers lasted, I think, at
least into the 1950s. I can remember one of ours, from 1956 I
think.”
Here’s that list: “Anderson’s Red & White Store, 1 Summer
St., 3750; Paul J. Whelan, dentist office, IOOF Building, 5236;
Reed Kendall Service, 617 E. Main, 6222; Pennhills Club, Minard
Run, 6159; Lincoln School Building, Tuna, 9676; or Lincoln, Zella
G. Mrs., 8724; or Lincoln, J.W., 8982.”
“There are too many Johnsons, even Johnson businesses, but maybe
Johnson svrc. sta. 412 E. Main, 7877; too many Burns, maybe Burns
Oil Co., 6933; no Kuische; four Oliver.”
We were prompted by this note to check the list for one of the
phone numbers – Dr. Paul J. Whelan. His son, Dr. Pete Whelan, still
practice dentistry and his phone number? 368-5236. And Pennhills is
still 368-6159.
