JULYS PAST: Since we’re about the mark the “official” end of
summer, we thought we’d better hurry to publish some “noteworthy”
July events as compiled by Bradford Landmark Society:

In 1900, July 2: As a result of careful and critical
enumeration, the population of the city of Bradford is 17,305. July
6: A mad dog caused a reign of terror on Main Street, biting men
and children, horses and dogs. The dog was finally killed in East
Bradford. July 7: William Hanley was awarded the contract to build
the Carnegie Library Building.

July 13: The overhanging sidewalk on East Main Street, skirting
the west side of the hill, has been completed. The walk is laid
upon stringers supported by steel brackets. July 20: Men at work on
the new Kinzua viaduct are out on a strike and all work on the
bridge is stopped. The contractors refuse to advance wages from
,4.40 per day to ,5.50.

In 1901, July 8: Bradford has 165 streets on which buildings
have been erected; 2,107 buildings are owned by occupants, and the
population is 17,608.

In 1902, July 28: Lightning caused an explosion of gas in a tank
of the Emery Pipe Line. Oil in the tank burned fiercely and then
overflowed – blazing oil flowed upon the roadbed of the Erie
Railway, destroying the track for a considerable distance.

In 1904, July 19: A man, divested of his clothing and attempting
to eat grass, gave an “open air” performance in Lewis Run before
being arrested. July 26: The Italian residents of the 5th Ward have
organized a club called the Italian Patriotic Club for social
purposes and the development of citizenship.

In 1907, July 17: DeSantis Brothers of Chicago will open a meat
market at 37 Mechanic St.

In 1910, July 11: The Hotel Holley formally opens – four
stories and fireproof, with 75 sleeping rooms.

In 1919, July 4: Lt. Parker Cramer pilots first plane into
Bradford and lands at side of the highway on Fred Hooker’s meadow.
Lt. Harri Emery accompanies him.

In 1922, July 5: Nitroglycerine is used to blow a safe at the
Bradford Ice Cream factory at 44 State St., where ,50 is taken.
July 7: Bids will be advertised for construction of the bridge
across the Allegheny River at Seneca Junction to open a much-needed
artery into New York state.
