BIG 30: Welcome to Bradford, all you Big 30 football fans!
Kick-off is 7 p.m. We have to pull for Pennsylvania, of course, but
this friendly competition is mostly about seeing the best players
across the Twin Tiers – and raising money for charity.
ON PATROL: Ray Feura dropped by with his “official” Wartime
Service Awards from 1943-44 and 1944-45 as a member of the School
Safety Patrol from the 5th Ward School.
“The bearer is commended for valuable wartime service in the
school safety patrol,” reads the award presented by the American
Automobile Association. The card bears a picture of a badge that
says, “Patrolman, School Safety Patrol.”
He also dropped off a newspaper clipping which showed the entire
unit from 5th Ward School at that time.
“School children attending the Fifth Ward school at Elm and
Avenue B daily are confronted with traffic disadvantages. First,
the motorists driving either on Brennan Street, Elm Street, Avenue
B, Rochester Street and High Street, and then the railroad
crossings at the intersection of Elm and River streets. Despite all
this the School Safety Patrol boys pictured above have done a fine
job in not having any of the school youngsters injured.”
Pictured, along with Ray, were Joseph Fredericko, Marvin
Hitchcock, Jack Mongillo, Richard Mongillo, Donald Connor, Richard
Bell, Jack Felmlee, Donald Hipchen, David Clyne, Dick Cottillion
and Ward Dahlgren.
We also heard from Larry Vecellio of Gainesville, Ga., on the
same subject: “We had the patrol in Lewis Run and there were some
long walks when you took the kids home. At least it seemed
long.”
“I, and others, went on the Washington trip and was selected to
carry, along with kids from the state, the Pennsylvania banner down
the main street in Washington in the parade.
“Others in Lewis Run on patrol were Alex Pantuso, Louis Pias,
Ann Benedict, Congetta Monago, Bernard Franco to name a few. Then
onto St. Bernard High School.”
Larry adds a memorable note: “… remember 50 years ago this year
we went undefeated, untied and thrice scored upon for a 7-0 record.
Go Ramblers.”
For those of you other Rambler fans, mark Aug. 6 on your
calendar. Our sports department will carry a special story on that
50th anniversary. Sports editor Joe Vinelli interviewed Larry, Mike
Vigliotta and Teddy Viola about that spectacular season.
