SPECIAL PLACES: Got a favorite Bradford restaurant that now only
exists in your memory? How about these:
Patrick Johnston of Bunn, N.C., writes: “Well, you started it …
maybe to some it does not qualify as a restaurant but try and find
a better hot dog back in the day than when Ma Pete’s was original.
It was called The Washington Restaurant – at least that’s how the
phone book had it – but to me it will always be Ma Pete’s.”
Robert Potts of Lakewood, Ohio: “I remember a night club at
intersection of Bolivar Drive and Seaward Avenue Extension called
the Brook Club. As I recall, it was as classy a night club as we
ever had in Bradford, comparable to those in larger cities. I don’t
think it was there very long. I always wondered who owned it, and
why it didn’t last. The food was excellent.”
Barney Snyder of Tucson, Ariz.: “Back in my day (I graduated
from BHS in 1952), we seldom went out to dinner. Probably once a
year at most. I do recall Casey’s in Limestone as having great
spaghetti as well as the Italian Club. I also recall mom and dad
saying the Villa was a nice place to eat. They liked the food
there.”
“As for me, I was a pretty picky and puny kid growing up in East
Bradford so when I found a place I liked, I was given a buck and
was allowed to go by myself. There was a hole in the wall place
next to the fire station in East Bradford. They had a hot meatloaf
sandwich with mashed potatoes that, to me, was to die for. The fact
that I liked their potatoes drove my mom nuts ’cause I never liked
hers. I’d ask mom why she couldn’t make them like the restaurant.
Not a smart thing to do.
“When in high school, the Congress Street Diner on Friday and
Saturday nights was good. When I started driving, it was the Dairy
Bar in South Bradford. It seems we went there quite often before
taking our dates home.
“If you get it going on these places, you will have enough
material to last you for the rest of the year. Those were the days
of our lives and people always remember good times and good food
and when you put them together, it’s awesome.”
