PARADE TRAIN: Former Bradfordian Anthony Grill dropped us a line
asking if any RTS readers remember the locomotive that used to be
in every Main Street parade during the 1940s and 1950s. We’re
guessing Anthony’s referring to the old 40 and 8 locomotive.
MORE BUGS: Larry Skiver of Lafayette Township stopped by to talk
to one of our reporters about another pesky insect, the Sirex
Woodwasp, that’s attacking white pine trees. He said the U.S.
Forest Service put two traps on his property to stop these
attackers from migrating across the border from New York state.
The traps, he said, look like a multi-tiered bird feeder about
two feet in length with a diameter about the size of a baseball
bat. At the bottom of the trap is a catch basin with a reservoir
containing antifreeze.
Larry said the forest service representative who put up the
traps used a GPS system to log the exact quadrants of the traps
into their computer and now monitor them by satellite.
“I’m from Ohio,” Larry said, “so I know these insects were also
in that state.”
He added that during his residence in Ohio, the other unwanted
invader we’ve discussed in this column lately – the Emerald Ash
Borer – destroyed his ash trees.
SOAP BOX: “Just a little note to add to the soapbox Derby Race,”
Lillian Potter writes.
“My son Darrell had been in a couple of previous races before he
won the race in 1962. I couldn’t attend as I was in the hospital
with a new son born June 12. My family all came in to tell me the
good news, and we did go to Akron that year.”
FLAG SALUTE: James A. Luciano dropped off some information about
the passage of a bill that states it is now proper procedure for
veterans and servicemen not in uniform to salute the flag.
The previous law had stated that veterans and servicemen not in
uniform should place their hand over their heart without clarifying
whether they could or should also salute the flag.
U.S. Sen. Jim Inhof (R-Okla.) announced the passage of the bill
saying, “I believe this is an appropriate way to honor and
recognize the 25 million veterans in the U.S. who have served in
the military and remain role models to other citizens.”
