BLUE WINGS: Lew Zande of Bradford brought in a photo of three
members of the Blue Wings Feminine Fan Club posing next to the
Hotel Holley some time in the early 1940s.

Along with the photo, Lew brought in a clipping about the Blue
Wings: “Mrs. Cy Morgan, whose hubby is one of the best after-dinner
speakers in baseball, was guest of the Blue Wings Feminine Fan
Club. The attractive Mrs. Morgan took a bow during the evening.

“Members of the BWFF include June Huntoon, president; Louise
Autieri, vice president; Betty Coldrick, secretary; Zita Pessia,
Jerry Autieri, Jean Anderson, Helen Carletta, Frances Aveis,
Phyllis Clancey, Annette Jessia, Sally Minor.

“The club has no treasurer because the dues are merely attending
Blue Wing games.”

Lew added that Louise Kelly, mentioned above, was his aunt.

ST. SWITHIN DAY: Several weeks ago in our discussion of
weather, we asked for the date of St. Swithin Day. Tim Hoh of
Johnsonburg referred us to a Web site that gave us the answer –
July 15 is the feast day.

Of course, the old saying is that it will rain for 40 days if it
rains on that day.

Catherine Huber of Smethport added that if it doesn’t rain on
St. Swithin Day, we can expect dry weather for 40 days.

“We lived on a small farm near Lantz Corners and saw it come
true many times,” she said.

Catherine adds that farmers always hope for a wet, cold May and
June so they can get a barn full of hay.

At least there’s a sunny side to the spate of cold, wet weather
we’ve had in June.
