SMALL WORLD: Sandi Helander Camberg of Allegany, N.Y., had a
touch of home on a recent trip to Florida. She writes: “On a recent
trip to Disney World I was very pleasantly surprised to see
Smethport High Marching band in the afternoon parade at Magic
Kingdom. They looked and sounded great. I have an idea how hard
they worked to get there and practiced to look and sound as
wonderful as they did. I was very proud to stand and applaud
them.”

THOM MAHOLIC: Joe Auteri of Bradford drops us a line about that
60 Minutes program which featured a segment on the battle in
Afghanistan which cost Thomas Maholic his life. We had told readers
about it at the time it aired a couple months ago.

Local residents who may have missed the program can find it
online by going to the CBS News site or by Google-ing “Thom Maholic
60 Minutes.”

“I hope you can get the word out for everyone to watch,” Joe
writes. “There are some stills of Thom and a video at the end
showing his son receiving his honors. … It is extremely
moving.”

THANKS!: On behalf of Joan Kan Schmidt of Cream Ridge, N.J., we
pass along this note of gratitude: “I want to thank Bob and Nancy
for the leeks. What a nice surprise it was. It’s just wonderful.
Thank you for all your efforts and remembering me. Can’t wait for
Saturday to get here so I can make my leek and potato soup.”

GAS PAIN: Raymond Tingley of Limestone, N.Y., phoned the other
day to relate his unique gas pain. He had just mowed the lawn which
took about a gallon of gas, but can remember a time when he could
have bought six gallons of gas for a dollar. For what it cost him
to fill up the mower one time in 2008, he could have previously
purchased 21 gallons of gas. He remembers having a tough time
selling his 1977 Chrysler because it was such a “gas hog.”

Oh, for the good old days. Of course, with the price of gas
changing so quickly, the “good old days” were “last week.”

In case you wondered, we have stopped our whining about gas
prices because it’s just not as much fun when everybody is in the
same lousy boat with us.
