YEARS AGO: “I recall in the late 1960s, located above McCrory’s,
now Performance Tool and Supply, was an office door lettered,
‘Bradford Phillies.’ Wonder if that landmark is still there?”
Today’s inquiry is from Ted Muse. He also writes on another
local subject:
“Also, in the recently published book, ‘Images of Rail, East
Broad Top Railroad,’ are a couple of references to Bradford. On
page 33 is a copy of their motor coach (bus) schedule, dated July
4, 1936, which provided service between Buffalo and Washington,
D.C., with stops in Bradford, Kane, Punxsy, Altoona etc.
“Wonder if any RTS readers recall riding their bus?”
“On page 103 captioned beneath a photo of EBT’s car No. 20 it
states it was ‘purchased in 1907 from the Big Level and Kinzua
Railroad’ but this car had also served as the private car No. 2 on
the Bradford, Bordell & Kinzua, according to Barber & Woods
book, ‘BB&K’ (1971).
He adds, “Note: the East Broad Top Railroad is located in
Orbisonia, Pa.,”
EXTRA HELP: If you really want to get Mom a special gift for
Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, how about saving her ,3,600 a year
on the cost of prescription drugs?
Kenneth Park, Social Security District Manager in Olean, N.Y.,
tells us there is extra help available through Social Security that
could pay up to ,3,600 a year for your mother’s monthly premiums,
annual deductibles and prescription co-payments.
To figure out whether your mother is eligible, Social Security
needs to know her income and the value of her savings, investments
and real estate (other than the home she lives in).
To qualify for the extra help, she must be receiving Medicare
and also have income limited to ,15,600 for an individual or
,21,000 for a married couple living together.
Even if her annual income is higher, she still may be able to
get some help if she or her spouse support other family members who
live with them; have earnings from work; live in Alaska or Hawaii;
and have resources limited to ,11,990 for an individual or ,23,970
for a married couple living together. Resources include such things
as bank accounts, stocks and bonds.
You can phone him in Olean about more information or go online
at www.socialsecurity.gov and fill out an easy application.
