EAGLE ALERT: A reader on his way to vote Tuesday saw a pair of
eagles on Route 321 south between Marshburg and Willow Creek. He
couldn’t help but thinking about the patriotic symbolism as he was
getting ready to make his ballot choices in what is certainly an
American tradition.

WRONG DATE: Shirley Bremiller of Lancaster, N.Y., was just one
of several online readers who spotted an error in the Wednesday
edition: “Wow, I didn’t know there was 34 days in a month and how
fast we made it to 3008. Wrong all the way around!”

OK, so we made a tiny error in the date! On the obituary section
we had, “April 34, 3008.”

What can we say? It was a long (election) night Tuesday, April
33, 3008, in the newsroom.

IT’S TODAY: Bradford’s version of “Antiques Road Show” hits the
Pennhills Club from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. today, a benefit for the
Bradford Landmark Society. The event is free and open to the
public, but there is a small fee for any appraisals and are limited
to three items per person. See you there!

MUSICAL NOTE: We heard from Joe Monti of Winter Springs, Fla.,
on a recent subject: “It’s been fun to read recent ‘Round the
Square mentions of some of the musicians from Bradford’s vibrant
live music scene of years gone by. I thought I’d put in a plug for
my grandfather, Nick Monti Sr., who played drums, four-string
banjo, and some guitar and mandolin for many years in several local
bands and orchestras.

“He played with friends such as Mike Zook (fiddle), John Zande
(accordion), Bob Stack (sax), Harold Harmon (clarinet and sax), and
Helen Lunn (piano).

“My dad, Nick Jr., says his dad used to play a lot of Italian
and Polish weddings that often lasted two or three days.

“Grampa was also an official in the musicians’ union for a time.
He met Tena Zamberlan at the Valley Hunt Club in Lewis Run, where
he was playing a gig and she was working in the kitchen. They
married on Valentine’s Day 1931 and made it 46 years until he died
in 1977 and she in ’93.

“They took my dad to see many of the big-name big bands that
came through town back in the day: the Dorsey Brothers, Harry
James, Cab Calloway, etc.”
