LUNCH TIME: “I was talking on my office phone while watching a
meadowlark just outside the window. Suddenly, a sharp-shinned hawk
came out of nowhere and pounced on the meadowlark.”

Matt Benson said “It stood on the lark for a minute – while I
hurried to get off the phone and grab my camera. Between the size
of the meadowlark and the gusting wind, the hawk was having a
difficult time taking off.”

“It flew just a few feet and landed again. That gave me time to
put on a longer camera lens before it finally got going and landed
in a nearby pine tree for lunch.”

Many people are not aware that some species of bird will attack
others – as Matt’s series of photograph so clearly indicates. It’s
a dramatic thing to see.

BEST BAND: Martha McCabe of Reading has a “best band”
recollection: “The best rock and roll band of the early ’60s was a
group called ‘The Jesters.’ I think they were from Buffalo or
Jamestown, but I’m not sure. They played at the Brook Club, the
Legion and Cuba Lake Pavilion in the summer. The bass player was a
little guy called ‘Moose.’ He would always place the bass on its
side and lay on top of it whenever they played ‘Hound Dog.’ They
always had a full house wherever they performed and had a faithful
following of fans.”

MINOR NOTE: Don Lombardo of Middletown, Conn., reminds us of a
topic we haven’t “batted” around much lately: “Bradford once had
minor league baseball. Warren Spahn and Roy Face played for
Bradford. (Don Zimmer and Maury Wills played for Hornell). Where
was the old ballpark and are there any pictures of it?”
