SNIPPETS: Fred Mackendrick of Petersburg, Ill., writes, “You
mention band members in the ’40s. We would listen for hours, Louie
Tentillo playing his accordion on his porch in Foster Brooks. About
the leeks – if you came to school smelling like leeks they would
send you home.”
Jerry Kleisath of Preble, N.Y., writes, “Talking about Zippos,
when I was in high school I won a contest for getting the first
deer in the county and won a Zippo lighter with a picture of a
hunting dog on it. My son still has it along with various other
lighters in his collection.”
Gary Bacha of Rixford dropped by to show us what looks like an
old corkscrew found in a box of items taken from a bar he used to
own. It says in the side, “Compliments of H.M. Plague, McKean Club
Rye and J.H. Cutter Whiskies, Bradford, Pa.” Those names are new to
us.
THAT TIGER: Bob Hasard of Eldred writes, “I have this book Tiger
At The Bar reprint. Republished St. Marys, Pa., 1999. The amazing
fact, at the bottom of this page there is this statement,
‘Manufactured in the United States of America.'”
Tom Aiello of Kane writes on the same subject, “I purchased
several copies from the Ridgway Area Chamber of Commerce this past
year. The folks at the Chamber were extremely helpful in my quest
for the book and we had a prolonged chat about some of the
incidents in the Elk County area that are mentioned in the
book.”
We noticed, too, that the recent publication of the Bradford
Landmark Society is also offering it for sale.
Incidentally, we had stated previously that the re-printed
edition was a condensed version of the original. Not so. B.J.
Campbell of Derrick City stopped in to show us proof that the two
editions are identical.
NEXT ONE: What comes after a trillion? That is a logical
question given the size of our country’s incredible budget deficit.
Since the problem isn’t going away anytime soon, you might want to
remember the sequence: quadrillion, quintillian, sextillion,
octillion, nonillian, decillion, undecillion, duodecillion. … a
jillion more than any of us will ever see!
