LOOK UP: We continue to get bombarded with reports of spring
arrivals.

Gracie Kemick phoned Monday to tell us about a flock of
northbound geese she heard this past Friday in Derrick City – they
were flying north in that snow storm!

A couple other reports Friday of other spring harbingers.
Barbara Atkins of 494 Interstate Parkway had a “whole flock of
robins all over the back yard.” And Ed Higley of Coryville tells us
he had 20-25 robins and about six red-winged blackbirds in his yard
that day.

Don Munsell of Austin saw a flock of 15 geese headed north about
11 a.m. Thursday. “I wondered what the heck was that noise,” he
said, comparing the geese’s incessant honking to the sound of an
alarm clock.

A week ago today, Mary Lou Irons reported 40-45 red-winged
blackbirds visiting her home.

’56 CALENDAR: John Zenner drops us a line from Bridgeport,
Conn., concerning that 1956 Era calendar. “In regards to the
picture of Marilla Brook that was on the 1956 Era calendar, the
picture was taken by my late father John E. Zenner at our home at
1135 W. Washington St. As far back as I can remember growing up,
that calendar was always on the back of the closet door. When we
sold the house a few years back to move my parents here to
Connecticut, in the process of cleaning out the closet, we found
the calendar again. The calendar has all 12 months still in
place.”

THAT BOOK: Tom Ewell of Montgomery, N.Y., has follow-up
information on the book, “Tiger at the Bar,” which details stories
from this region during the gangster era.

“A few years ago I purchased a copy of this book at the
bookstore in the Olean Center Mall for my mother. I remember her,
my father, and several of their friends discussing some of the
events mentioned in the book. The book had been out of print for
years and the Bradford Library did have an original copy of it, but
it was kept in a special room and I believe there was a long
waiting list for it,” he writes.

“Wonder why someplace like the Pitt Bookstore wouldn’t have this
for sale. It would make a great present for any occasion for the
experienced citizens in our town.”
