TOP DOGS: Our items on Bradford’s rival for top beagle – a
follow-up to the Westminster dog show in which a 15-inch beagle
named Uno won “best of show” – has brought us some interesting
feedback.
Peggy Anne Paterson of Rehoboth Beach, Del.:, writes: “I read
with interest the RTS article regarding Bradford’s background in
the world of beagle dogs. As mentioned, Dr. Homer Wilson actively
participated in the competitions connected with that breed.”
“My father, Harold L. Everly Sr., trained and housed several of
those dogs for Dr. Wilson at our home in Foster Brook.
“Probably the most outstanding beagle trained by my father was
‘Penzbest Harlequin’ who was an international field champion in the
1950s.
“I helped my father care for and feed those dogs so it was
natural that my first full-time job after graduation from Bradford
High School was at Hounds and Hunting magazine.
“The current publisher of that magazine, Bob Slike, was our
neighbor who was living, as he does now, in Foster Brook. As a
young girl, I frequently attended with my parents many field
competitions that make beagling so exciting and interesting to so
many people throughout the United States and the world.”
Louie “Corky” Galloway writes us from Tucson, Ariz.: “It was
great to see reference made to Doc Wilson and his hounds. I, too,
was delivered by Doc Wilson in May 1934 and he was the only doctor
I knew until the age of 11. My vaccinations, shots, first
stitches, etc. … were by him.”
“If my father was with us at Doc’s dispensary at his home, he
would engage Doc Wilson in a discussion of beagles.
“Often Dad (a lover of beagles and beagle field trials) would
take the family to the trials. The voices of beagles (bell mouthed)
were a joy to hear and gave many exciting moments to the spectators
and competitors at field trials.
“Our beagle, Sport, was pure rabbit hound and a true character
in his own right. He once spent the better part of a year as the
housemate of a crow, Gladstone, that was rescued by Dad while
fishing Marvin Creek. They were the original odd couple.”
Meanwhile, we have more news to report soon on Uno, that winning
Westminster beagle, and his coming connection to Bradford. Stay
tuned…
