FISH MARKET: William Burdick of The Plains, Va., sets the record
straight about that old fish market we had told you about: “There
were two Rogalski brothers. Hyman owned the premier jewelry store
in what is now called the Forest Oil Building. His watch repair
desk could be seen in the window. Julius ran a fish and chicken
store on the north side of East Washington. He would buy chicken by
the crate, slit their necks and toss the carcass into a 55 gallon
drum. When the rumpus died out he would remove and process them.
The fish arrived in town by rail packed in ice. There was a most
unusual smell, not bad but different.”
