LOOK UP: “Do bald eagles migrate? The answer is yes and no!”

That’s our response today from our buddy in Kane known as
“Eagle-Eye.”

He continues, “Eagles will migrate if there is a lack of food.
Example: If the lakes or rivers are frozen over in their home
territory, they will move to locations where there is open water,
where they will have a food supply. “

“When the Kinzua Dam freezes over, you will find many eagles on
the Allegheny River below the dam. The river doesn’t freeze! Bald
eagles are not true hunters. They are basically scavengers, and
will also frequent road kills.

“Robins winter this area basically the same. If there is food,
you will see them all year round, if no food, they will go further
south to a food supply. This is a great time of the year to see
bald Eagles. Best time – early morning, just below the Kinzua
Dam.”

SIGN OF TIMES: John D. Laskowski of Halifax sheds some
additional light on the state’s misspelling problems:

“Many PennDOT errors abound statewide. In central Pennsylvania
we have two signs on Route 11/15S one mile apart that state
Trevorton 5 Harrisburg 47, and Trevorton 5 Harrisburg 46!”

“Then the seven signs along Route 325E all have errors in the
sign labeling (the correct – Clark’s Valley Rd.) as Clarks Valley
Rd., Clarkvalley Rd., Clarksvalley Rd. and Clark Valley Rd.

“At the western end of 325E there is a sign stating. ‘Harrisburg
6 miles.’ Two miles south on Route 322/22E a sign states,
‘Harrisburg 8 miles (Did I go backwards?)’

“On Route 6 from Route 59 looking west at Ormsby there is one
sign stating Mount Alton 4 miles, Warren 57 miles. Fifty-five
yards west, the next sign states Mount Alton 6 miles, Warren 57
miles!

“Then there are those large yellow signs all over PA stating:
Buckle Up Next Million Miles. Insert ‘one,’ please; million is a
unit, not a number!

“My all-time favorite: those annoying PennDOT electronic
billboards stating ‘Driver Safe.’ Hey, PennDOT! Hire a retired
English teacher please or look at the back of any PA Game
Commission sign (Hunt Safely).”
