LOCAL ANGLE: If you saw the History Channel program, “Life After
People,” you may have seen a distinctly local item – the former
Kinzua viaduct.

Doug Sanders of Petaluma, Calif., tells us he was watching the
program which included a video of Kinzua Bridge and how and why it
came down, “making the statement that over time it corroded and
gave way in the high winds.”

Doug tells us the program also mentioned the Eiffel Tower and
said that tall structures are prone to this problem.

“Did anyone else see this program? It was like going home again.
Unfortunately they didn’t mention Bradford only ‘a bridge
Pennsylvania.'”

NEED HELP: We’ve had a couple readers ask for our other readers’
help:

Donald J. Comes of Smethport writes, “I am interested in making
a collection of older school pictures of students who attended
schools in Norwich and Keating Townships, McKean County. These
would be preserved for historical purposes and credit given to the
donors. All pictures returned, if desired.”

Nelson E. Clements of Levittown also sent along a note: “I am a
retired professional scouter of the Boy Scouts of America, and I am
trying to write a book on the council Boy Scout camps of
Pennsylvania.”

As part of that project, he would like to include the local
camp.

“Scouting in your area was conducted by the McKean County
Council from 1924 to 1926, then by the McKean Potter Area Council
from 1936 until 1947,” he writes.

“The only council camp attended by the scouts that I could find
was called DeKanewide, and I found very little information about
it. I am sure there were other camps that the scouts attended. If
you have any further information that you can share with me on Camp
DeKanewide or other camps, it would be appreciated.

“I have also obtained a patch that I believe to be from
DeKanewide and would like to confirm it. It is a 3-1/2-inch green
felt circle with a black pine tree in the center and a 1/2-inch
black edge around the outside edge. It came with some cards dated
1926 from the Kane area.”

Clements can be reached by email at ajapeu@verizon.net, or by mail at
108 Vermont Lane, Levittown, Pa.19054-1029.

MORE STORES: We’ll be getting serious tomorrow about those old
Bradford stores.
