PORT ALLEGHANY: “Just wondered if anyone has commented on the
new sign posted by the new bridge just completed in Smethport. The
sign reads, ‘Port Alleghany 10 miles.’ It should be noted that we
northern folks spell it ‘Port Allegany.’ Anyone have any idea on
how the spellings seem to vary from North Pennsylvania to South
Pennsylvania? Does it depend on which side of Interstate 80 you
live on? Ha ha.”

That’s the note from Todd E. Burgess of Port Allegany.

Far be it from us to be critical of a spelling error but this
one is a dandy. We hope the sign police get out there soon with
their blue pen and removes that “h.”

MORE STORES: Our continuing saga today of the stores that once
operated in Bradford.

Sue of Rew writes, “What about DeSelles Candy Store, McCrory’s
Five & Dime, the Jack and Jill Shop, S.K. Tate’s, Loblaw’s on
Williams Street, and the A & P on Mechanic Street.”

Karen (Lore) Robinson of Lake View, N.Y.: “Just read about
stores on Main Street. I know there were three Five & Dimes in
town. I know Newberry’s was on The Square and McCrory’s was on Main
and Chestnut. I worked there for awhile. I just can’t remember
where Woolworth’s was. If anyone can remember I would love to
know.”

A reader adds these to our growing list: Studley’s Music House,
Carl’s Furniture, Fanny Farmer Candy, Betty Dixon Candy, General
Garage, Johnson’s Restaurant, Park Cut Rate, Yampolski’s, Tate’s
Furs, Emery Hardware, Ernst Florist, Dana’s Men’s Clothing,
Nichol’s Clothier, Fishkin’s, Sam Leshner, Herm’s Kendall, The
Picture Shop, Kiddy Shop, B&O News at the head of Main Street,
and Down’s Furniture.

Benny Pessia writes from El Segundo, Calif.: “How about
Hatchet’s Novelty Store (spelling could be wrong) right next to the
J.C. Penney Store across Patton Alley if I’m not mistaken. And
Galanis Restaurant near the Hooker Fulton Building where I met my
wife. And Greenewald’s Clothing Store on Main Street and Bodine
Hardware on Mechanic Street. And Rose Kreinson’s Woman’s Clothing
Store. Spelling could be wrong here also. And the Bradford Inn on
Davis Street run by my Dad, Joseph Pessia.”
