PET TIME: Attention, per lovers! Do you think your dog or cat is
extra special? If so, be sure to enter it in the second annual
Newspapers In Education pet photo contest which is now under
way.

Proceeds from the entry fee will benefit the program which
serves schools in our circulation area.

Last year’s contest was a huge success. And this year’s has been
expanded and all pets entered will have their photo published in a
“contest collage” prior to announcing the winners.

Judging will be done by a panel of Era employees.

Entry blanks, along with contest rules, will appear in The Era
during January and extra blanks will be available at The Era
office.

Winners will be announced in February. If you have any
questions, please call The Era office during normal business hours
and ask for the Newspapers In Education department.

MORE STORES: Another reader phoned with a whole list of Bradford
shops: Kreinson’s Dress Shop, Alpine Soda Fountain, Pecora Meat
Market, Budd’s Jewelers, Olson’s Department Store, Friedman’s Men
Store, Mark’s Furniture, Jaffe’s Dress Store, Wise Shop, Rosen’s
Furniture, Main Street Diner, Lorenzo’s Bakery and Sarah Burns Knit
Shop.

Jim Belardia stopped by to tell us that the Cake Shop had a
cafeteria – but Davis Bakery did not. He also recalled Galanis
Restaurant was where the Cake Shop/cafeteria was. “Before Archer’s
was even Levy’s, it was the Alpine Cafeteria, and Western Union was
next to it. Colligan Realty occupies the spot once occupied by
Betty Dixon candy shop,” Jim reports.

Dennis O’Brien of Frederick, Md., writes: “Let’s not forget Mrs.
White’s drug store and soda fountain, Frances Crooks candy store,
Sweeley’s drug store, Crops variety store, Pete Meldrums news room,
Thessens meat market, Readings grocery store, and last but not
least Anderson’s Diner, best hamburgers, fries, and pies!”

This subject always gets Bradford and ex-Bradford residents
writing so more feedback in upcoming columns.

1986 FIRE: Rusty Koelbel of Reisterstown, Md., who sent us a
note about some of those Bradford stores, also sends along a remark
about a separate Bradford event: “I received a copy of the new
Dresser Home book for Christmas. A ‘must have’ for Bradford history
buffs! I watched it burn down that cold February night in 1986. I
was a junior in High School. My friends and I could actually see
the flames from Main Street!”
