MORE SHOPS: Our recent column about old stores in Bradford
obviously hit a nerve. Feedback, feedback, and more feedback:

Lynda Lore of Hampton, Va., writes: “A.J. Olson’s made way for
Tops if I remember correctly. Before it was built, though, the city
flooded the land for outdoor ice skating. And not too far away was
Powell’s.”

Sonny Grill of New Philadelphia, Ohio: “I also grew up in
Bradford in the ’40s and ’50s and would like to add to the list of
stores. How about Ken’s Little Folk Shop, Noah’s Ark, Henretta’s
news stand, Alpine Cafeteria, Smith Brothers hardware, Rosen’s,
just to name a few, and how many bars are on the list? I read this
paper every day and wish I was there.”

Gary V. Crawford of Fort Myers, Fla., sent this e-mail:
“Additional business to list that are now gone: Crawford’s Food
Mart, Meat Market, Bradford Journal’s office, Tony the Barber.
These were on Mechanic Street. Jensen Paint/Nickel’s paint on
Kennedy Street.”

Rusty Koelbel of Reisterstown, Md., writes, “Here a few more
that may bring back memories for some: Clark’s where Value Home
Center is out East Main; FBC (Family Bargain Center) where the old
Tops Market was; AMC International Auto dealership, on corner of
Center and Barbour.

“The Flame (bar) where the bike shop is now on corner of East
Wash and Mechanic. Was also used by the Seneca Highland Players, I
believe. I think I saw a ‘Dracula’ play there when I was a kid! The
original Nick’s Red Hots out South Avenue, J.D. and later “Lofty”
lanes in The Square.

“Powell’s Pharmacy at the end of Main – Chet Powell himself
would deliver prescriptions (liquid medicine in a brown glass
bottle) to our house. The original Tasta Pizza. Wasn’t it right
next door to Powell’s? The original Napoli Pizza on Interstate
Parkway.

“Across the street on Bennett was S & A Food store – more
famously known as ‘Sylvia’s’ – where we used to ride our bikes to
get candy and football cards. Ashe Shoe Co. and Oppenheim’s Shoe
Co. both on Main Street

“The Early Late Store was where the Crosby Mini-Mart on Jackson
Avenue is now. It was a Mini-Mart before they were even called
Mini-Marts!”

Jogging some memories? We have quite a few more in days ahead.
Stay tuned.
