A SALUTE: Our recent thanks for our soldiers and sailors drew
this comment from former Bradfordian Bill Weisenfluh of Ocala,
Ala.: “Let us remember the soldiers from the National Guard Company
K, 28th Division, that never returned from WWII. The 3rd ward at
Bradford lost many boys along with many other boys. I was only 13
years old but I remember the many telegrams received by mothers and
fathers during that war.”
EXTRAS: P. Gary Poleto of Bradford shares his experience in the
movie industry: “Just writing to let you know that with this
hysteria about the movie being filmed in Bradford, I was an extra
in a movie in California in 1987. It was called ‘The Principal,’
with Jim Belushi and Louis Gossett Jr.”
“I belonged to an acting group, Showcase Theater Repertory, in
the San Jose area. One of our group members, Daniel Royal, called
and asked me if I wanted to be an ‘extra’ for one Saturday. It paid
,35 and they fed us Burger King!
“He played a security guard in the movie and introduced me to
both Jim and Lou. If you think movie stars ‘work’ for their money –
forget about it! They’re pampered like babies – well paid at that.
Lots of down time.
“The movie was partially filmed at the abandoned Oakland Tech
High School. I was in the auditorium scene, and if you look REAL
QUICK, you can see me in the background, wearing a leather
jacket.
“As for working hard, whenever they had to film a side shot or
shot from behind for Lou Gossett, they used his brother as a
stand-in, because he also had a shaved head. What most people
wouldn’t know is that Lou Gossett is over 6 feet tall, but his
brother was maybe 5’5.” They had him wear high shoes that looked
like the ones Herman Munster wore.
“Break a leg!”
TODAY’S QUOTE: “Clearly, the purpose of television news is no
longer to inform the American people or serve the public interest.
It is to ‘glue eyeballs to t he screen’ in order to build ratings
and sell advertising,” said former vice president Al Gore in
2005.
