DEER PHOTO: “I knew the day would come when, even in Bradford,
someone would get upset with a picture of a hanging deer. This used
to be a common site throughout the area at this time of year. I
remember pictures in the Era of the DeSoto showing a lot of deer
hanging. It was part of life in this region.”

That’s the second-last word today on our deer photo controversy,
today from Dan Karrasch of Bradford:

“Have we become so far removed from that life that we don’t want
our children to understand where meat comes from and man’s role in
nature? I would like to think that a parent would take the time to
explain this to a child and use this as a tool.

“Not all meat or fish comes from a supermarket cooler. It used
to be that a child growing up in this region understood and learned
these lessons growing up, but I am sad to say, this does not seem
to be. Adults, as well as children, need to be reminded from time
to time that there is a real world out there that where man has a
place in the natural order of things and you can’t always stick
your head in the sand and say it isn’t so.

“Hunting and fishing have always been a large part of life in
the northwest of Pennsylvania and will continue to be for along
time to come. That deer on the front page that bothers you so much
may also be a large part of someone’s pantry for the year. Look to
both sides of the story before you say your piece.”

A “Smith” from Bradford gets the last word: “I was glad to see
the feedback from other readers regarding ALL the pictures of the
dead deer. I, too, find the pictures repulsive and upsetting.
There has to be other noteworthy news in the area other than who
slaughtered the biggest deer. And no, not everyone around here
hunts and finds it interesting. My 5 year old cried at the deer
hanging on the front page. Where is your common sense and good
taste? You make Bradford look like po-dunk America.”
