IT’S HOMETOWN: Leland McCollough of Perry, Ga., who spent his
formative years in Bradford, agrees there is something unique about
Bradford.

He writes, “I spent my early years in Bradford, before I went
off to the Navy in WWII. The Emery was the hotel then, there were
two theaters, Shea’s for the big movies, the Grand for run-of-mill…
It cost 11 cents to go to the Saturday movie at the Grand. Two
large ginger ale bottle refunds and a penny did it. The movie was
continuos from 12 and they often had to come and get me out at 6
p.m.”

“The Park Cut Rate was on the corner of the Square and had
booths for a quick drink and bite. There were three 5&10s,
Newberrys, McCrory’s and Woolworth. There was a diner around the
corner from Main Street on Congress Street, I believe, that was
usually busy.

“The railroad (passenger) train came to Bradford then and we had
a Pony League baseball team and our high school football team under
Coach Pflug was a winner. Art Giancotti was one our stars.

“Zippo, Kendall and Case Cutlery were some of the businesses and
all the auto dealerships seemed to be owner by people named
Rink.

“We used to take our cars out to Hedgehog Hill to see if we
could get up it in high gear.

“I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii for three years and in
Florida for five before moving to Georgia but there was something
unique about Bradford, winters and all. I hope to go back someday
and see the changes.”

We admit there seems to be something unique about Bradford. All
small towns, we’re certain, have a strong nostalgic draw on their
former residents but it still seems that Bradford has more than its
fair share.

GAS PAIN: Jim Piscitelli of Bradford did a gasoline poll when he
was in touch with relatives over our past Thanksgiving holiday
weekend. He’s what he discovered: A gallon of gas cost ,6.17 in
Hong Kong; ,4.57 in Australia; ,2.80 in Vietnam; ,3.13 in Boston;
and ,2.85 in Dallas.

Bradford? ,3.13 a gallon.
