OUR HOME: “My name is Tom Bradford; a large part of the reason
that I moved to Bradford Pa., is because my last name is Bradford.
I’ve worked for IBM for nearly 11 years; I have the type of job
that enables me to live anywhere in the country.”
Wow, we find it hard to believe someone would do such a thing …
but stranger things have happened in this little town.
What we found was interesting, though, were Mr. Bradford’s
observations:
“Before I moved here I took a good look around: I observed the
industries, I met some of the people, and I read the local paper. I
got the distinct impression that the citizens of Bradford are both
honest about their circumstances and are unhappy with things the
way they are now (critical ingredients for lasting change).
“Many people talk about leaving Bradford; I would be less than
honest if I didn’t admit that it’s crossed my mind. However, I am
encouraged to see that some of the people that left are now coming
back and trying to make a difference. Leaving is easy; complaining
is easy; taking the helm of a big ship and turning it around is
not.
“Thomas Edison once said: “Opportunity is missed by most people
because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”
“I regret that at the moment I don’t have the time to pitch in
and help the way I’d like; However, I noted earlier that I’ve
observed two critical ingredients needed for lasting change; it’s
worth noting the rest: 1. Be honest about your circumstances; 2.
Face your fears and doubts; 3. Define a clear vision; 4. Set goals;
5. Reward progress; 6. Team up; and 7. Stay motivated.
“For the citizens of Bradford I see no problems with steps 1, 2,
and 7. However, I suggest more attention to steps 3 through 6.”
We know several groups are working hard at pulling Bradford up
by its bootstraps but it’s not easy for a town in the middle of the
Rust Belt and Appalachia. To its credit, though, Bradford always
seems to attract people who come to love it – often more than
Bradford natives!
