MILD WINTER: “Weather prophets are predicting a mild winter.”
That was the word from the Nov. 12, 1907, Era, continuing:

“Among the signs enumerated are the following. Muskrats have not
even begun to build their winter quarters. Ducks have been slow in
migrating. Deer have their thin fall suits on. The beavers have not
begun cutting their winter supply of wood.

“The owls have not yet withdrawn to the forest paths. The
songbirds have not all sailed southward. The toadstools have few or
no wrinkles. The possum has only one curl in its tail this
fall.

“The wild geese are still sojourning on the northern lakes.
There is no thick down under the chickens’ feather nor any bony
growth on their feet. The goosebone is fair and unspotted. Vermin
under logs and old planks are more numerous and lively than ever
before.

“Fishworms are near the surface. In fact, nature with myriad
voices unanimously attuned, declares that the winter of 1907-08
will not amount to shucks.”

ONE MORE: Bigfoot just won’t go away! Lori Vecellio of Bradford
writes Tuesday: “Another sighting of the Bigfoot story. Was just on
the Ellen Show today. Was also on Friday.”

VETS DAY: We are on the verge of Veterans Day, of course, and
wanted to pass along information on an apolitical, non-commercial,
social network for U.S. military veterans on the internet –
veteran.com

This online community was started by Steve Lecarpentier, a
disabled vet who had become frustrated with trying to keep up with
old buddies.

“I got the idea of this community when I retired from the
military and lost track of many of my old friends. We all used our
local e-mail addresses and now everyone has moved on to other
places,” he said.

“In fact, about a third of online customers in America change
e-mail addresses every year, losing about half the relationships
they had set up with people that communicate with them via
e-mail.

“Joining Veteran.com is a great
way to maintain your relationships with friends and former comrades
in arms.”

Here some of the other assets of the site:

· Veteran.com does not distribute your e-mail address or send
unwanted promotions.

• There is no advertising at all on Veteran.com – including pop-up/pop-under
advertising.

· Military forums where you can tell your stories and pose your
questions to an audience of fellow veterans.
